The paddling community is a friendly one, and not just limited to outrigging. You’ll often meet familiar faces on the ocean on surf skis and kayaks, and many paddlers use both.
Many clubs lend each other canoes for regattas and help each other with loading and unloading of boats. Despite the expected rivalry in races, you’ll always be cheered over the line and congratulated by your competitors
Values
The traditions and culture surrounding outrigger canoeing are centred around respect for the canoes, the ocean and each other. Ohana is the Hawaiian word for family and a theme that runs strongly throughout the outrigger community.
Sharing a love for paddling and the ocean, there are social events throughout the year, some within individual clubs, and others where state and national clubs come together to celebrate the sport.
